Today is January 17th. Did you make resolutions for the New Year? An article in US News online on January 7, 2019, tells us that 80% of these resolutions are broken by the middle of February. By looking around at my gym this morning, it seems that a number of new people have already fallen by the wayside. I really think that people have good intentions when they make their New Year’s resolutions. They usually pick something that will improve their life and maybe even the lives of those around them. The problem for most of us is that our good intentions are actually no more than intentions. For example, if I want to get in better shape in 2019, that is a good goal. I will feel better and probably look a little better. Today I can look in the mirror and almost see the new me. But what if I never go to the gym? What if I keep hitting the snooze button over and over each morning instead of getting up? Before long I will realize that the person in the mirror still looks the same. I had a good goal and good intentions to follow through, but I didn’t. Which gets me to my point -- I quit making New Year’s resolutions a number of years ago!
Don’t get too excited, I’m not letting either of us off the hook. Each year I want to be a better me than I was the year before. I want to be a better husband, father, grandfather, counselor, speaker, leader, and person. So this is what happened to me last year. I had some really good days. I had days that I rocked it as a husband. There were days of real connection with my family. I even had someone tell me one time that they could see Jesus in me. Yet, last year, I also had some really bad days. There were days that I was tired and when I am tired I can be irritable. There were days that I just wanted to get away from everything and everybody. On those days I am not rocking anything! Now this is what God taught me. First, He loved me the same every day no matter what I did or did not do. Second, none of the days were wasted if I turned them over to Him.
For me, that means that I try to learn from the bad days. Is there something I could have done better or differently or was it one of those days we can all have that I just need to accept? He taught me that I did not need to beat myself up and that life is a journey. He reminded me that Jesus took care of my bad days and my good days a long time ago on a cross on a hill. My role each day as His child is to keep my focus on Him. So, I pray. I ask for His help. I read the Bible. I filter my thoughts through Him. I do those on my good days and my bad days. They make the good days better and keep the bad days in perspective.
No matter where you are with your New Year’s resolutions, why not take a fresh approach? Why not just focus on Jesus? You will have good days and bad days. He will be there to cheer you on during the good days and to carry you on the bad days. You won’t have to worry about breaking your resolutions. It’s not about checking off a list. It’s about developing a lifestyle. Each day is another opportunity to become more like Him. Can you even imagine who you will be a year from now? Maybe you cannot but He can!
