How to Keep the Spark Alive

By: Rachel

Being a professional matchmaker, I meet a lot of people, who want to know more about what I do and curious about my relationship expertise. One question that seems to pop up frequently, from people in all stages of relationships is how do you keep the spark alive?

Although the end of the honeymoon period is inevitable, sustaining the passion in a relationship is not rocket science. All it takes is a little work and the ultimate key to relationship success, communication.

Being honest with your partner about your feelings is important but it’s also just as important to listen to and be respectful of their needs and feelings as well. This will help you find new ways to relate and connect while ultimately strengthening your bond and increasing your intimacy.

Find out what your partner needs, then make it happen

The people with the most fulfilling romantic lives are generally just as concerned with pleasing their partner, as much as they are themselves. Do you know your partner’s love language? If not, find out what it is and use it to show them you care. Whether you’re giving them gifts or words of affirmation, investing in your partner’s happiness is an investment in your own happiness as well.

Notice the little things

Small gestures from your partner like kisses throughout the day, pulling out a chair, or cooking something delicious. These things are showing your partner how much you care, without saying a word. Especially men like to feel needed, and it gives them joy, in being able to please you. By acknowledging their effort with kind words or a smile, it will go a long way, and encourage them to keep up the good work.

Share more with your partner

Is there a new mouth-watering recipe you want to try out in the kitchen? Or a binge-worthy show you can’t wait to watch? Of course, you enjoy those activities by yourself, but why not involve your partner as well? Trying new things together will bring you closer as well as keep your relationship feeling fresh and exciting.

Don’t be afraid to have difficult conversations

One complaint of couples that feel they have lost the spark in their relationship is the fizzle of physical intimacy. Having conversations about sex, or lack thereof, in your relationship can be awkward, but are necessary. If you have felt this way in your relationship, your partner has likely felt the same way too. So, don’t be embarrassed and make time to have these delicate conversations, you’ll feel better once you do.

If all these tips seem overwhelming at first, try to come up with one thing, that you can do to improve your romantic relationship. When you have done that, ask your partner the same question. Compare notes and see where the conversations lead. Most likely, you’ll feel seen, heard, and understood in a way that you haven’t noticed before.
