The book 3000 Would You Rather Questions has been sitting on the corner of my desk for a few months now. I purchased it on the sale table at Barnes and Noble and I don’t actually remember why. I guess the title intrigued me. This morning I picked it up and read a few of the WYRs. How would you answer these?
-
WYR give up your favorite food for a year or give up candy forever?
-
WYR eat ice cream every day for a year or go without ice cream for two years?
-
WYR go on a trip around the world with your best friend or a week-long vacation at a resort in Hawaii with your spouse?
Of those three, only one was an easy answer for me. I would pick a week in Hawaii with Nancy every time. I realized that I have choices with Nancy every day. I can choose to spend time with her or a friend. I can come home early and relax with her or go hang out at the Apple Store. (Don’t judge me!) When we have an evening at home, I can watch an episode or two of Stranger Things by myself (Nancy isn’t into it) or watch something we both like together.
It’s not that any of those choices are bad in themselves. They are all things I enjoy. I’ve learned that most of my choices are not between good or bad but rather between good and best. For me it really is about balance. I can spend time with a friend and go to the Apple store and watch Stranger Things and still have a great marriage if there is balance. Actually for me it goes beyond balance to tipping the scales toward Nancy. If I really want the marriage that I talk about all the time, I need to choose the best, and that is spending time with her and relaxing with her and watching something with her.
What do you choose? Here’s your question to think about this week. WYR spend time with your spouse or __________ ?
