Insights from Dr. Kim: Following God’s Lead

By: Kim Kimberling

A number of passages in the Bible can be tough for us. As Christians, we have to decide how we are going to view the Bible and how we let it affect our lives. Personally, I believe that the Bible is the Word of God and it is my blueprint for life. In the counseling room, some of the things people are struggling with are directly correlated with things the Bible warns us about.  Infidelity and lying are good examples. They both break trust and both take a lot of diligence and hard work to overcome. I often think how uncomplicated our lives and marriages would be if we just followed God’s lead.

I cannot begin to count the number of times I have heard someone in counseling say these words, “I will never forgive him/her for that.”  I get it. Sin causes pain. We want to prevent future pain. We want to protect ourselves. In counseling people, I have to let them go through this stage.  It is part of the grief that comes with betrayal. Yet, at some time they come face to face with this tough verse. In Matthew 6, Jesus talks about forgiveness.  The Message translates it this way, “In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do.  You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others.  If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.” Jesus says we have to forgive.  When I look deep into myself and see my sin and how much I have been forgiven by God, I get it.  I get that I have been forgiven in a way that makes no sense but is real and true. It also tells me why I have to forgive.

Is there any unforgiveness in your marriage?  If so, why not take that first step toward healing today?  Pray that God will guide you from unforgiveness to forgiveness.  It will be a step towards your spouse and your marriage and towards healing for you.
